What is the Future of Local?

Background and media information.

“The Future of Local” is our quest to understand the complex relationship between people, destinations and global brands.

Alongside Pan American World Airlines, InterContinental Hotels and Resorts were instrumental in the birth of global travel and tourism, pioneering a consistent global luxury travel experience at the dawn of the jet age.

More than 60 years later, as countries, cultures and individuals around the globe continue to evolve and expand, we are faced with an ever-increasing globalised world. How do global and local thrive together? InterContinental has always been an integral member of every local community in which it operates.

Often the first international luxury hotel brand to enter an emerging market, they have long invested in the communities that surround their hotels. “The Future of Local” is the brand’s quest to explore in detail the reach and effect of globalisation on our world and our lives to ensure the long-term sustainability and vibrancy of our local markets and partners.

DANIEL RAVEN-ELLISON

GUERRILLA GEOGRAPHER / NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EMERGING EXPLORER

Founder of The Geography Collective and Director of Explorer HQ, his work is focused on challenging people to explore and think about the world in new ways. In the process he is hoping for nothing less than a revolution in how we think about and through geography.

In one of his projects Daniel walks across entire cities to change how we see them. Daniel describes the explorations as conversations with the city in which he develops a sense of the local while reflecting on its relationships with the distant and global. His films and photography have been seen in schools, Dance East at Glastonbury Festival and are featured in the Harvard GSD book, Ecological Urbanism.

Daniel believes that we are all explorers, constantly asking questions and searching for answers. Daniel has been the driving force behind Mission:Explore, a global project that helps hundreds of thousands of children explore, play and learn in their local areas.
